CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT
For a clean water and sanitation project, after careful research and consideration, Wings chose to approach 28 small communities on an isolated stretch of the Purus River to offer assistance - a stretch somewhere between the small river outposts of Labrea and Pauini. The project depends on the Wings amphibian aircraft based in the city of Porto Velho, Wings staff from Manaus, and also uses some medical and dental volunteers from
various other cities in Brazil. The goal is to benefit about 1,700 people, in 350 families, ultimately resulting in improved health through sustainable water filtration and sanitation. The project is really just getting underway, but there are already good reports. A recent letter from staff in Manaus reported these from local people in the communities.

TESTIMONIALS

Asas de Socorro missionaries and volunteers with residents of the Purus River
"This year we ate better - fewer canned goods, because we understood that the beans from our gardens are even better than what comes from the city - no pesticides,"
"We planted and worked our gardens together, from one side to the other, in community work days,"
"We're more united, understanding ourselves better.."
"Our confidence grew to approach local government agencies. The mayors are paying attention, recieving us in their offices, and one even sent material to build a well in our community."
"Husbands are growing, showing more attention to their families", 'We've learned things we never knew."
"Our families got some medical attention, doctors who care, dentists so careful that it doesn't even hurt.."
"This year we learned more about God and the Bible. We'd never heard teaching about the Bible like that, now I know it's very important for me.."

"This year we learned more about God and the Bible. We'd never heard teaching about the Bible like that, now I know it's very important for me.."

"We got to know the God of Creation and how he want us to steward it.."

Another partner in the project is MEAP, an evangelical outreach to isolated fishing communities. They have found that this holistic approach is opening doors in a way they hadn't seen yet in the area. A challenge is the cost of aviation gasoline - now over nine dollars a gallon where the plane is based in Porto Velho. If you sense a desire to help build this model that can be multiplied, learn more here, and tax deductible contributions can be made through Mission Aviation Fellowship, at MAF.
